WoW Forever Rogue Leveling Guide 1-60: Best Spec, Talents, Rotation, Poisons and Openers

The rogue changed more on November 3 than any other class. Blizzard's launch notes rebuilt all three talent trees, added Shank, a cheap off-hand strike that gives energy back, and doubled how much your poisons scale with attack power. Many rogue guides written in October are now out of date.

This guide is built on what four rogue experts found in the beta and on the new talent tree. Where they disagree, we show both sides. Checked on November 4, 2026, against Blizzard's launch notes of November 3. The beta went to level 30, so everything above 30 is a forecast; we update the guide after launch.

Best spec: Combat

perplexity keeps it short: "For leveling, there's no real secret. You run a standard combat build." Djexde agrees: Combat is "the best leveling Rogue spec by far", with high kill speed, low downtime and little setup. He calls Assassination too talent-hungry and Subtlety slow to kill, though good for PvP while you level.

Talent build by level

Djexde's Combat order on the new tree, with one fix from us. His guide puts Flash of Steel at 27-31 and Cold Blood at 56, but on the November 3 tree neither talent is open at those levels yet. We moved Weapon Expertise and Aggression earlier and Flash of Steel later, so every talent opens on time. The result is 19/32/0.

Djexde calls Riposte "our first major talent point": it costs little energy, hits harder than Sinister Strike and disarms the target. Blade Flurry is the second, because it lets you pull several mobs at once, and Adrenaline Rush the third. He warns that the new Assassination talents, Venom and Seal Fate, give "far too little benefit" while leveling.

Our take on Shank: none of our experts covered it for leveling yet, but it costs 5 energy and gives 15 back, so press it whenever it is ready. perplexity already weaves it into every PvP opener. Blizzard puts the full cost of training from 1 to 60 at about 206 gold. New spells do not go on your action bars by themselves.

Rotation

Leveling, one mob

perplexity's version for the early levels: "You run to mobs, you press Sinister Strike, you build three or four combo points, and you press Eviscerate." Djexde binds Riposte and Sinister Strike to one key with a macro: `/startattack`, `/cast Riposte`, `/cast Sinister Strike`, so Riposte always goes first.

Two or more mobs

Pull two or more mobs on purpose for Blade Flurry and press it whenever it is ready; against strong mobs, add Evasion. Djexde treats Blade Flurry's attack speed as a bonus, not the main point.

Poisons and weapons

• Poisons: Instant Poison on both weapons while leveling (perplexity, Djexde). Since November 3, Deadly and Instant Poison take twice as much from your attack power, so poisons are a real part of your damage now.
• Weapons: a slow main hand around 2.4 speed or more and a fast off hand for poison procs (perplexity, Djexde). After Hack and Slash, prefer swords and axes; maces lose value (Djexde).
• Quest weapons (Djexde): Blade of Cunning from the class quest at 10, Hammer of Orgrimmar from Ragefire Chasm (Horde), Wingblade from Wailing Caverns (Horde, 18+) and Outlaw Sabre from Blackfathom Deeps (Horde).
• Stats while leveling: Agility, then Strength, attack power and Stamina; hit is your best secondary stat and still helps above 8% (Djexde). Instant Poison, Dense Sharpening Stone and Windfury Totem now work together.

Racials were reworked on October 26-27 and repeated in the launch notes. The experts split by goal: leveling or PvP.

Professions

• First Aid: "an almost mandatory profession for levelling as a Rogue" (Djexde): bandage while the mob is under Gouge or Blind.
• Skinning and Leatherworking while leveling: Leatherworking gives the Camp Tent, Djexde's "buff of choice when levelling solo". Keep Well Fed up, and follow the Sleeping Bag quest chain for its 3% experience buff.
• Engineering and Mining for PvP at 60 (perplexity): gnomish first for its bind-on-pickup items, then goblin for mortars and sapper charges. If you want to level as fast as possible, skip them while leveling.

In dungeons

Djexde: your rotation stays almost the same; your value is control. Sap a mob before the pull, Blind or Cheap Shot loose ones, Kick healers and dangerous casts, and press Blade Flurry whenever it is ready. Expose Armor replaces five Sunder Armors on bosses.

PvP in short

Our tier list rates Subtlety A and Combat and Assassination B in PvP.

• Openers on the new tree (perplexity, November 4): all start with Poised at full energy, and Shank refills energy mid-stun. His safe Backstab opener: Cheap Shot, Backstab, Shank, Gouge, Kidney Shot, two Backstabs, Blind.
• Diminishing returns: they last 15-20 seconds; Kidney Shot shares them only with itself, and Blind with nothing (perplexity).
• Sap trick: Sap, turn 90 degrees, then Cheap Shot: the Sap does not break (perplexity).
• Justwoo, from the tournament: in the rogue mirror, "all that really matters in this match is who stuns who first"; keep Rupture up to stop a re-stealth. Against a paladin, drink a Free Action Potion before Hammer of Justice.

At 60: Assassination, Subtlety and Combat

In the MythicSim level 60 simulation, re-run on November 4, 2026 with the new rogue tree, Assassination is the best rogue at 921 DPS, Subtlety 909 and Combat 878. All three are B tier in our WoW Forever tier list. Blizzard promised rogues the best single-target melee damage; the simulation does not show it yet. Mutilate now opens at 40 and deals 90% weapon damage.

8 tips that save time

1. Do the class quest at 10 for Blade of Cunning.
2. Riposte and Sinister Strike on one key.
3. Shank on cooldown from 24.
4. Slice and Dice from 42, on 2 or more combo points.
5. Instant Poison on both weapons.
6. Pull two mobs for Blade Flurry.
7. Bandage under Gouge.
8. Keep Well Fed and the Sleeping Bag buff up.

Where Blizzard is taking the rogue: energy from Shank instead of Relentless Strikes, poisons as a real damage source, and fewer points needed for core talents. We update this table with each patch.
