If you played Classic, this page shows what you need to relearn and what still works the old way. Each section links to our detailed guide. Checked on October 30, 2026, from Blizzard's announcements and the beta.
Short answer
Forever keeps level 60, the Classic XP curve and the eight original races, and adds a ninth, the Skyborne. It brings over 1,000 new quests, four new zones, new dungeons and raids, reworked talent trees for every class, camping and Legacy systems, transmog, a built-in damage meter and rulesets instead of realms. Dungeon XP now comes mostly from one-time quests, and Classic Era addons need Forever builds.

Race and character creation
The Skyborne are a new race that can join either faction and start on their own island, Zephras Isle, for levels 1 to 12. They are only available with a Forever pack; the eight original races are in the subscription.
Forever also opens new race and class combinations, such as Undead Paladins, and gives every race two active and two passive racial abilities with a similar budget. Character names are two-part: a given name and a surname, unique together in your region.
World: quests, zones, dungeons and raids
Blizzard added over 1,000 new quests across 1-60 and expanded the original zones. Four new zones come with them: Zephras Isle for the Skyborne start, Riverglades for 35-45, Shen'Dralas from 40 and Mount Hyjal at 60.
New dungeons sit along the leveling road: Hall of Thanes, Ruins of Lordaeron, Excavation Site: Wetlands and City of Dalaran below 35, then The Drowned City, Krol'dok Stronghold, Alcaz Island Prison, Blackmaw Hold and Shaper's Terrace higher up. Raids open on December 9, with new 10-player and 20-player raids such as The Barrow Deeps and Hyjal Summit.
New ships also shorten the long walks: Stormwind Harbor to Darkshore and Westfall, Menethil Harbor to Southshore and Auberdine, and Tanaris to Riverglades.
Leveling and XP
The XP curve did not change: Blizzard's data puts the average time to level 20 at 20.5 hours, against 20.4 hours in Classic Era. What changed is where the XP comes from.
| Dungeon mobs | Give little XP |
| Dungeon quests | Give most of the dungeon XP: run each dungeon once with its quests |
| Mobs below your level | Give less XP than in Classic |
| Low spell ranks | Get less spell power |
| Respawns | Faster in the busiest zones |
| Camping | Campfire bonuses for an hour, rested XP from a tent |
| Crafted food | +5% XP from kills |

Classes and talents
Every talent tree was reworked. The goal Blizzard gave is fewer flat percentage bonuses and more talents that change how a class plays. Some old talents return, some new ones arrive: Mages get Arcane Wrath, Rogues get Mutilate, Shamans get Elemental Mastery back.
Several group buffs became baseline instead of talents, including Blessing of Kings, Divine Spirit and Improved Mark of the Wild. Dual specialization opens at level 40, so one character can keep a leveling build and a group build.
Systems for alts: Legacy and collections
Legacy is new: account-wide challenges such as taking a class to 25, 45 and 60 or a crafting profession to 150, 225 and 300 earn Legacy points. You spend them on perks for every character: more rested XP, earlier talent points, cheaper flights and more.
Collections are account-wide too: mounts, companions and transmog appearances carry across characters and rulesets.
Professions and gold
The profession system is the Classic one, with more than 600 new recipes. Gathering tools and books come from a quest in the starting zones, First Aid now makes healing potions, and profession crates pay a new currency, Merchant's Favor, spent on rewards. The mount at 40 is bought as part of the riding training, as in Burning Crusade.

Transmog and graphics
Transmog arrives in Forever, limited to the same armor type: a plate wearer transmogs to plate. You can switch between the original character models and HD models, and Blizzard describes two presentations: a Classic one with older models, no quest objectives on the map and no transmog, and an enhanced one with modern models and those features on. The world itself also got light visual improvements.

Realms, PvP and battlegrounds
There are no realms. You pick a ruleset: Normal, PvP, Roleplaying or Roleplay-PvP, with Hardcore later. Groups, dungeons and raids stay inside a ruleset, battlegrounds mix them, and on PvP you can only play one faction. You can also set a preferred online language to meet players who speak it.
For PvP, the classic battlegrounds stay and a new one arrives: Darkspear Islands, a 15 vs 15 battle for control points off the coast of Kalimdor. The honor and rank system returns with seasons.
How to pick a ruleset:

What stays the same
- Level 60 and the Classic experience curve.
- Eight original races and nine classes, with their class identity.
- The original zones, now expanded rather than replaced.
- Slow, social leveling: no group finder teleports, no flying.
- Subscription price: Forever is in the same
WoW subscription.
Where players disagree
Some Classic players say Forever changes too much and want the pure 2004 experience. Others see it as the Classic+ they asked for: the same world with years of new content ahead.
Coming from Classic: what to relearn
Do
- Run each dungeon once with every quest: that is where the XP is.
- Plan your talents again in a Forever calculator.
- Sit by a campfire every hour and eat crafted food.
- Install Forever builds of your addons.
- Pick a ruleset with your friends: characters cannot move between them.
- Use Legacy points on alts.
Skip
- Farming dungeons for XP the Classic way.
- Classic talent builds and Classic Era addon files.
- Waiting for the original WeakAuras or threat meters.
- Expecting to group with friends on another ruleset.
