  • WoW Forever Hunter Leveling Guide 1-60: Best Spec, Talents, Pet, Rotation and Gear

4 November 2026 Blog news

The hunter is probably the easiest class to level in WoW Forever: your pet tanks, you shoot from range, and you can kill mobs above your level. But Forever changed a lot. Aimed Shot is now baseline, you can drop traps in combat, a new Summon Hawk talent calls birds of prey, and Auto Shot needs you to stand still for half a second. At launch Blizzard also raised hunter damage and put all traps on one shared cooldown.

This guide is built on what four hunter experts found in the beta. Where they disagree, we show both sides. Checked on November 4, 2026, against Blizzard's launch notes and hotfix of November 3. The beta went to level 30, so talents above 30 are a forecast; we update the guide after launch.

Short answer

Level as Beast Mastery: put your first points into Deadly Aspects, take Summon Hawk at 25 and Intimidation at 30. Tame a cat or raptor and replace it every 10 levels or so for a new rank of Claw and Bite. Open with Hunter's Mark and Serpent Sting, use Summon Hawk, then Aimed Shot. Watch your mana: it runs out fast. Take Skinning and Leatherworking. Do not plan Pathfinding at 18-19: it sits in the third row now. All traps share one 30-second cooldown, so it is one trap per pull.

Best spec: Beast Mastery

Docoda calls Beast Mastery the superior build for leveling: damage goes to your pet, and the pet holds aggro more easily. Marksmanship works "if you insist". ARROWli plans to play full Beast Mastery at launch, for PvE and PvP, mostly because of the new Summon Hawk. Celz agrees: the pet "does incredible damage and tanks enemies". Kargoz levels as Beast Mastery all the way from 1 to 60.

Survival surprised testers at 20, but it is a melee-heavy spec. ARROWli called himself "a big anti-melee kind of guy" and skipped it.

Where players disagree

Beast Mastery before 20? Docoda goes Beast Mastery from level 10. ARROWli found that Beast Mastery's first 11 points "don't do much" at 20 and played Marksmanship with a pet instead. Both agree that Beast Mastery pulls ahead after Summon Hawk at 25 and Intimidation at 30.

Talent build by level

Docoda's Beast Mastery build, 31/16/4 at 60. Levels 10-30 were tested in the beta; levels 31-60 are a forecast.

Pro tip

Many guides, including the Method and Mobalytics ones, still put Pathfinding at 17-19. Blizzard's launch notes confirm it is in the third row of the Beast Mastery tree, so you cannot take it with your first 10 points. Use those points on Endurance Training or Improved Revive Pet.

Lone Wolf (+20% damage without a pet) is not an option while leveling: you need the pet to tank. Try the build in the Wowhead talent calculator for Forever.

Key spells by level

LevelWhat you getWhy it matters
8Concussive ShotSlows a mob while you kite it
16Immolation TrapFire damage; traps work in combat, and all traps share one 30-second cooldown
18Multi-ShotInstant since October 16; shares a cooldown with Aimed Shot
20Aimed Shot, Aspect of the Cheetah, Freezing TrapAimed Shot is baseline for every spec; its bonus damage more than doubled at launch
25Summon Hawk (talent)Calls up to two hawks for 18 seconds; ranks 2-4 at 36, 48 and 60
26Rapid FireBurst for hard fights
28Frost TrapSlows packs; uses the shared trap cooldown
30Feign Death, Lacerate, Intimidation (talent)Escape, a new bleed and a pet stun
34Explosive TrapAoE for packs
40VolleyChanneled AoE

What you can skip at the trainer to save gold (Docoda): Track Beasts, Aspect of the Monkey, Track Humanoids, Eagle Eye and Flare. Always buy every rank of Raptor Strike, Hunter's Mark, Mongoose Bite, Arcane Shot, Aspect of the Hawk, Mend Pet, Serpent Sting and Wing Clip. Blizzard puts the full cost of training from 1 to 60 at about 206 gold. New spells do not go on your action bars by themselves, so check your spellbook after each visit.

Rotation

One target

  1. spell ability hunter snipershotHunter’s MarkOn every target before you attack
  2. spell ability hunter quickshotSerpent StingOn anything that lives longer than a few seconds
  3. spell ability hunter animalhandlerSummon HawkWhenever it is ready; it shares a cooldown with Arcane Shot
  4. spell inv spear 07Aimed ShotYour main hit between Auto Shots
  5. spell ability impalingboltArcane ShotOnly every third cycle once you have Summon Hawk
  6. spell ability whirlwindAuto ShotStand still for half a second before it fires

Auto Shot now needs you to stand still for 0.5 seconds before it shoots, so stop moving between kites. ARROWli uses a /cast !Auto Shot macro so pressing it again never cancels the shot. Celz keeps two hawks and the pet out at all times, and lets the pet land a few hits before he starts shooting, so it holds aggro.

Where players disagree

Aimed Shot on every mob? Docoda and Celz keep it in the rotation. Kargoz saves it for elites and bosses: on normal quest mobs, staying mobile is worth more than the cast. Since launch, Aimed Shot's bonus damage has more than doubled, which makes the cast easier to justify.

Packs

Before 40:

Packs before 40

  1. spell ability hunter snipershotHunter’s MarkMark the dangerous one
  2. →
  3. spell ability upgrademoonglaiveMulti-ShotHit them all
  4. →
  5. spell spell fire selfdestructExplosive TrapRun in, drop it, back out
  6. →
  7. spell ability hunter animalhandlerSummon HawkExtra damage on the pack

From 40: Multi-Shot while there are four targets or fewer, Explosive Trap if you have the mana, then Volley for its full duration.

All traps share one 30-second cooldown, so choose one per pull: Explosive Trap for a pack, Freezing Trap for a dangerous add, Frost Trap to kite.

Mana: the real hunter problem

ARROWli ran out of mana constantly between levels 20 and 30. What helps:

  • Use Arcane Shot less: once you have Summon Hawk, only every third cycle.
  • Let the pet do the work on easy mobs; finish with Auto Shot.
  • Explosive Trap only when you have mana to spare.
  • Build a Mana Well at your camp (Docoda) and drink between pulls.
  • Do not waste Serpent Sting on mobs that will die fast (Celz).
  • For damage per mana, Kargoz ranks Immolation Trap first, then Summon Hawk, then Serpent Sting.

Your pet

PetWhyNotes
Cat1.1x damage, Claw, Bite and DashARROWli's pick: the fastest cat, 1.2 second attack
Raptor1.1x damage, Claw and BiteSame damage as a cat
Carrion Bird1.0x damage, Demoralizing ScreechLess damage taken; great for Hardcore
BoarCharge: 1 second root and a burst of speedGood for pulling

Each pet family has its own ability, similar to Wrath of the Lich King. Blizzard nerfed the strongest ones on October 16: the crocodile's healing reduction is now 25% for 6 seconds on a 15 second cooldown, and the Bird of Prey's disarm lasts 3 seconds on a 90 second cooldown.

Every 10 levels or so, tame a new pet with a higher rank of Claw or Bite and teach it at the stable with Beast Training. Claw comes from Clattering Crawler, Shore Crawler, Black Bear Patriarch and Den Mother. Your pet's Dash at 30 comes through Wild Taming: tame a beast that has Dash and use it in combat until the game says you have learned a new spell (Celz).

Pets now scale with your gear: Kargoz found they take part of your attack power, armor and Stamina, so every upgrade you wear helps the pet too. They no longer take player buffs or stat scrolls.

Where players disagree

Is a fast cat worth hunting for? ARROWli says the 1.2 second cat "rips on DPS". Docoda says fast attacks are scaled down in damage, so the only gain is interrupting casts more often. Both agree a cat or raptor is the right family. Kargoz picks by utility instead: a crocolisk on PvP servers, a boar for its Charge.

Where players disagree

Do you need to feed your pet? ARROWli found his pet "happy 24/7" in the beta: happiness only drops after the pet dies or is dismissed. Docoda still says keep it fed, because after a death low happiness lowers its damage. Carry a stack of food for its family just in case.

At 60: Survival weaving, Marksmanship and Beast Mastery

Leveling as Beast Mastery does not mean playing it at 60. In the MythicSim level 60 simulation (single target, re-simulated on November 4, 2026 with the launch buffs), the top hunter build is a Survival hybrid that weaves: it shoots, steps into melee between Auto Shots for Raptor Strike and Mongoose Bite, and steps back out. It is the top build of any class: see our WoW Forever tier list.

BuildTalentsSimulated DPSHow it plays
Survival weave0/20/311,288Melee between Auto Shots; #1 of all specs in the simulation
Marksmanship weave5/31/151,016Sniper Shot, some melee weaving
Marksmanship turret5/33/13994Shoots only
Survival melee5/11/35958Pure melee, never shoots
Beast Mastery weave31/20/0908Bestial Wrath, Summon Hawk, weaving
Beast Mastery turret31/20/0801Shoots only

Where players disagree

Weaving is the simulation's idea, not a proven raid tactic yet, and the simulator says so itself. Our experts split on it even while leveling: Kargoz weaves Raptor Strike and Immolation Trap into his pulls from level 16, while Celz says kiting is always better. If you do not want to dance in and out of melee, Marksmanship that only shoots is 994, close behind the weaving build.

Gear while leveling

  • Stats: Agility and attack power for PvE; ARROWli does not chase Stamina while leveling. Kargoz values Stamina and armor a little more, because part of them goes to your pet. In PvP duels, Stamina matters.
  • Enchants: Agility or Stamina.
  • Learn every weapon skill you might use: ARROWli carried a blue level 13 crossbow he could not equip.
  • Ammo is finite: keep a full stack and check your bags before long trips.
  • Leatherworking gives you bind-on-pickup blues: Dark Leather Boots and Trapper's Leather Belt; Celz calls Brawler's Leather Helm the best helm he found in the beta.
  • Weapons to aim for (Kargoz): Master Hunter's Bow from the Big Game Hunter quest in Stranglethorn Vale and Verdant Keeper's Aim from Maraudon.

Best races

ARROWli's advice: pick a race you like. Racials were reworked on October 26, so older videos are out of date.

FactionRaceWhy
AllianceNight ElfShadowmeld works in combat; Quickness gives dodge and speed
AllianceHumanPerception and Will to Survive; Ruthless gives 1% crit
AllianceDwarfStoneform; Artisan's Precision gives 1% hit
HordeOrcCommand: pets deal 5% more damage; Blood Fury every 2 minutes
HordeTrollBerserking now lasts 15 seconds; Kargoz's top Horde pick
HordeTaurenPlainsrunning: up to 60% speed while you keep moving

Professions

Skinning and Leatherworking: Leatherworking gives you useful gear at least every 10 levels. After the cap, swap Skinning for Engineering if you play PvP. Docoda, ARROWli and Celz agree on this. Celz likes that Leatherworking keeps you moving: while you skin, the pet starts on the next mob. Learn First Aid either way.

For your camp: Fish Bowl, Enchanted Lute, Camp Chair and Mana Well. Useful Legacy perks: Bountiful Harvest, Thrill of Adventure, Talented and Gourmand.

Strengths and weaknesses

StrongWeak
The pet tanks for youMana runs out in long fights
Ranged attacks, no glancing blowsAmmo to buy and carry
Can kill mobs above your levelA dead pet means Revive Pet, healing and mana
Strong at low levels in PvPNo trinket against rogue stuns

In dungeons

You are ranged damage with a pet: keep the pet on your target and off loose mobs. ARROWli found the new Ruins of Lordaeron at 15 "slightly challenging" and its loot excellent; since launch, all its quests need level 15. Use Freezing Trap on dangerous adds, and Feign Death from 30 if you pull aggro.

PvP in short

ARROWli went 3-3 in the level 30 duel tournament and thinks Survival would have done better, because enemies killed his pet quickly. His tips:

  • Improved Concussive Shot is worth one point.
  • Marksmanship with Scatter Shot and a trap "is going to be so nasty in duels".
  • Grounding Totem absorbs Sticky Glue.
  • Survival's roots share one diminishing returns group, confirmed in Blizzard's launch notes, so root chains are shorter.
  • With one shared trap cooldown, plan the fight around a single trap.

8 tips that save time

  1. Stand still for half a second before Auto Shot fires.
  2. Drop traps in combat, one per pull: all traps share a 30-second cooldown.
  3. Hunter's Mark every target.
  4. Once you have Summon Hawk, Arcane Shot only every third cycle to save mana.
  5. Upgrade your pet every 10 levels for new Claw and Bite ranks.
  6. Skip optional trainer spells: Track Beasts, Aspect of the Monkey, Track Humanoids, Eagle Eye, Flare.
  7. Eat food that gives 5% more experience, such as Slitherskin Mackerel.
  8. Keep a stack of ammo and pet food in your bags.

Where Blizzard is taking the hunter: after trimming aspects and auras in the beta, Blizzard put them back at launch and raised the damage of every main shot. Traps became one tool per fight, Survival's crowd control stays limited, and the pet stays central. We update this table with each patch.

Do

  • Level as Beast Mastery, or Marksmanship with a pet until 20.
  • Take Summon Hawk at 25 and Intimidation at 30.
  • Tame a cat or raptor and upgrade it every 10 levels.
  • Watch your mana: Arcane Shot less often.
  • Take Skinning and Leatherworking.
  • Try Survival weaving or Marksmanship in your second spec at 60.

Skip

  • Pathfinding at 18-19: it moved to the third row.
  • Planning two traps in one pull: they share a cooldown.
  • Lone Wolf while leveling.
  • Spamming Arcane Shot alongside Summon Hawk.
  • Running out of ammo far from town.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best hunter spec for leveling in WoW Forever?

Beast Mastery: your pet tanks and holds aggro easily. Marksmanship with a pet is fine until level 20.

What is the best hunter pet in WoW Forever?

A cat or raptor for damage, both with a 1.1x damage modifier. A Carrion Bird deals less damage but its Demoralizing Screech reduces damage taken.

Do hunters need to feed their pet in WoW Forever?

Less than in Classic. In the beta, happiness only dropped after the pet died or was dismissed; carry food for those moments.

What is Summon Hawk?

A new Beast Mastery talent at 25 that calls up to two hawks for 18 seconds. It shares a cooldown with Arcane Shot.

Can I still take Pathfinding early?

No. Since the October 30 hotfix, confirmed in Blizzard's launch notes, it is in the third row of the Beast Mastery tree.

Do hunter traps share a cooldown in WoW Forever?

Yes. Since Blizzard's launch notes of November 3, all traps share one 30-second cooldown, so you get one trap per pull.

What is hunter weaving?

Stepping into melee between Auto Shots for Raptor Strike and Mongoose Bite. The MythicSim level 60 simulation ranks a Survival weaving build first, but it is not proven in real raids yet.
