Leveling with friends is one of the best parts of
This guide covers how group experience works in Forever, which duos experts rate highest, and how to play as a trio, a group of four and a full party. Checked on November 4, 2026, against Blizzard's development notes from September to the launch notes of November 3. Where a rule is not confirmed for Forever, we say so.
Short answer
A duo with a healer is the strongest way to level with a friend: Warlock and Priest, Warrior and Shaman, and Paladin and Shaman top the duo tier lists. Quest together so every kill counts for both of you, sit at one shared camp for its buffs, and fill the gap in mob experience with each dungeon once. In a group of three or more, bring a tank and a healer and run every dungeon once for its quests; do not farm the same dungeon. All of you need the same ruleset and faction, and one guild and client language help you stay in the same layer.

How group experience works in Forever
| Kill experience | Split between group members, as in Classic; only your own level counts for the low-level penalty (Blizzard, October 8) |
| A much higher player in the group | If they are "vastly higher" than the mob, nobody gets experience; Blizzard gives no exact gap |
| Group bonus for 3-5 players | Not confirmed for Forever |
| Mob tagging | Not shared: you get credit only if you are grouped with whoever tagged the mob (Josh Greenfield) |
| Quest items | Handed out in turns when you are grouped, with some randomness (Josh Greenfield, September 26) |
| Dungeon mobs | About 20% more experience since October 8 |
| Dungeon quests | 50% less extra experience since October 1; most of a dungeon's value is in its one-time quests |
Your level, not the highest one. Early in the beta, the penalty for killing low-level mobs in a group used the level of the highest player. On October 8 Blizzard reverted it to the Classic Era rule: "only the individual's level matters". A higher friend no longer drags your experience down, unless they are so far above the mob that it gives nobody experience.
The split. In Classic, experience from a kill is divided between group members, with a bonus that starts at three players: 1.166 for three, 1.3 for four and 1.4 for five. Blizzard has not given these numbers for Forever, so treat them as Classic's rule until someone tests it. One player in the beta called the group bonus "so small it doesn't make up for the time lost".
Quest items in turns. Blizzard's senior game designer Josh Greenfield said grouped players now get quest items more predictably: "It's not 'pure' round robin. There's still some randomness, but it's more like a bad luck protection." Drop chances did not change, and Blizzard is "still dialing in" the system.
Is group leveling faster?
Where players disagree
Kargoz, a former co-founder of the RestedXP leveling guides, thinks duo leveling is faster than solo, because Forever has so many quests. His warning: a duo falls behind on mob experience, so "sometimes you almost have to grind or do some dungeons". On the other side, beta players on Blizzard's forums and Reddit said grouping slowed them down, mostly because quest items were not shared. That was before the quest item change and the faster respawns Blizzard set for launch.
What makes a group faster:
- A healer. No eating between pulls, and you can take packs of mobs you would avoid alone.
- Shared quest credit. A kill counts for everyone in the group who has the quest.
- Group buffs.
Battle Shout ,Trueshot Aura , Leader of the Pack, Moonkin Aura and four shaman totems reach everyone in the group, and since October 16 the whole raid. - One camp for everyone. Its buffs and rested experience reach every player who sits at it.
What makes a group slower: quest items that drop one at a time, mobs split between more players, and waiting for each other to loot, skin or hand in.
Duo leveling: the best pairs
Two public duo tier lists from late October agree on the top: Warlock with Priest, Warrior with Shaman and Paladin with Shaman. The table follows Whiter's tier list on Mobalytics (updated October 30); both lists were built from the beta up to level 30.
| Tier | Duos |
|---|---|
| S | |
| A | |
| B | |
| C |
Whiter judges pairs on downtime, covered weak spots, dungeons and a shared race at level 1. Whiter calls Warlock and Priest "the duo that never sits down" and Paladin and Priest "the safest duo"; a dwarf can play both Paladin and Shaman, so that pair can start together.
Where players disagree
Tier lists are a starting point, not a rule. Whiter adds that Warrior + Priest "might even be S tier", and any pair with a healer levels faster than two players who both have to stop and eat.
Why the healer matters
The warrior gains the most. Method's warrior guide says the class "can struggle while solo but shines in group content", and with a healer "it becomes immensely powerful". shoop, who wrote the Wowhead Arms guide, says Arms is at its best next to a healer: no pauses, and you can pull packs for Sweeping Strikes. Since October 8, damage absorbed by shields no longer costs a warrior rage, so a priest's
The warlock gains too:
Popular duos and how to play them
| Duo | Who does what | Tips |
|---|---|---|
| The warrior tanks and deals damage; the priest shields and heals | Arms or a two-hander instead of Protection; priest as Discipline with | |
| The shaman heals and buffs with Windfury and Strength of Earth | Both can deal damage; the shaman heals between pulls | |
| The druid heals, or tanks as a bear while the warrior deals damage | Feral or the Resto-cat hybrid for the druid | |
| The warlock pulls and drains; the priest heals the | Almost no time spent drinking | |
| Two hybrids: one tanks, one heals, both deal damage | A dwarf can play either class | |
| The pet tanks, the hybrid heals | The hunter needs a partner less than any class |

Pro tip
In Classic, kill experience is split between grouped players whoever deals the damage, and Blizzard has not announced a change for Forever. Healing costs the healer no experience, so heal first and deal damage second.
Trio: tank, healer and one damage dealer
We found no tests or tier lists made just for groups of three or four in Forever, so these sections follow roles rather than rankings. A trio is the smallest group that can pull like a dungeon party: one player holds the mobs, one heals, one kills.
- Tank: a warrior in Protection, a bear druid or a Protection paladin. Since the launch notes, Defensive Stance adds 80% threat and Bear Form 115%, so holding mobs is easier than in the beta.
- Healer: a priest, shaman, druid or paladin. Shadow priests and Feral druids can heal leveling content with healing gear and no healing talents, our class experts say.
- Damage: anyone, but area damage pays off: a mage, warlock or Enhancement shaman.
In Classic, three players is where the group bonus starts. Blizzard has not confirmed that for Forever.
Group of four
Four players can run any leveling dungeon short one damage dealer, and quest hubs get crowded: a Reddit beta player wrote that "most quest hubs can only really support 1-2 players", because quest items drop for one person at a time. Two ways to play a four:
- Split into two duos for quests in the same zone, and meet up for dungeons and elite quests.
- Stay together and lean on kill quests and area pulls, where shared credit helps everyone.
Full party of five and dungeons
Five players is a dungeon group: one tank, one healer and three damage dealers. In Forever, dungeons are worth doing once each for their quests, not for farming:
- Hydramist, a priest expert: dungeons were nerfed, so "questing route matters way more now", and they are not worth doing more than once.
- Kargoz: "Dungeons are 100% worth your time, but only do them one time."
- A beta group at levels 20-22 in Wailing Caverns counted 34 experience for a level 19 elite: about 683 elites per level. Blizzard raised dungeon mob experience by about 20% on October 8, but repeats are still slow.
Collect every dungeon quest before you go in. Some cannot be shared, mostly those that give you an item when you take them; Wowhead's list of every dungeon quest marks which can be shared. Quests for Ruins of Lordaeron all need level 15 since launch.
AoE groups and dungeon boosting
Area farming is weaker than in Classic. A paladin's
Quests in a group
- Share quests with each other before you start a hub; most normal quests can be shared.
- A kill counts for everyone in the group who needs it, but objects you click and items that drop are still personal, so expect to wait a little.
- Mob tagging is not shared: invite before you hit the mob, or the kill counts only for its owner. Greenfield on shared tagging: "This is one of those things that we simply must hold the line on."
- Loot in dungeons unlocks transmog appearances for every eligible looter.
Bonuses for the whole group
| Bonus | What it gives | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Shared camp | Camp buffs for everyone who sits at the fire for about a minute | Camp buffs do not stack with class buffs |
| 5% rested experience, once per hour | Beta data | |
| Well Fed food | About 5% more experience from kills for 15 minutes | Almost every food that gives Well Fed |
| 3% more experience for two hours after three minutes in it | Found in the game files; Wowhead says it may not be in Forever; stacks with the camp and food | |
| Class group buffs | Raid-wide since October 16 | |
| Legacy perks | Most players have 0-1 Legacy points at launch |
How to get together
- Same ruleset and faction. Cross-ruleset grouping is not supported, and Horde and Alliance cannot group. On PvP rulesets, an account can have characters in only one faction.
- Same layer. Joining a group can move you to another layer of the world; at launch, the game shows a "refresh now" prompt first.
Icy Veins reports, from Blizzard'sWoW Forever podcast, that being in the same guild helps you share a layer even when you are not grouped, and that everyone should use the same client language. - No teleports. The Looking For Group tool does not teleport you, and Meeting Stones cannot summon. A warlock's
Ritual of Summoning can, with the warlock and two more players at the entrance. - Level gap. Keep levels close: a much higher friend can stop experience for everyone on lower mobs.
Mistakes that slow a group down
- Grouping with a friend far above your level and killing mobs that are low for them.
- Farming one dungeon again and again.
- Tagging mobs before you invite.
- Splitting up to loot and skin without waiting for each other.
- Skipping the shared camp and food buffs.
- Picking classes with no healer and no self-healing for both players.
- Different rulesets, factions or client languages.
Do
- A healer in every duo if you can.
- Same ruleset, faction, guild and client language.
- Share quests at each hub.
- One camp for everyone, plus Well Fed food.
- Each dungeon once, for its quests.
- Tank and healer in every group of three or more.
Skip
- A much higher friend killing low mobs for you.
- Farming the same dungeon for experience.
- Counting on Classic's group bonus: not confirmed for Forever.
