Take two gathering professions while you level and decide on a crafting one at 60. That is our pick for most
Short answer
Our picks before launch:
- Leveling: two of Herbalism, Mining and Skinning. They cost nothing and pay for your mount.
- Gold at 60: Enchanting first, then Alchemy with Herbalism. Fishing earns on the side without a primary slot.
- Raids: Alchemy for longer flasks, Enchanting for ring enchants, Engineering for bombs and gadgets.
- PvP: Engineering, with Mining for the extra Health.
- Want your own gear: take the crafting profession for your armor type and the gathering skill that feeds it.
- Cooking, First Aid and Fishing: learn all three on every character.

What changed for professions
- No new profession at launch. Forever keeps nine primary and three secondary professions, with no Jewelcrafting and no Inscription yet. You still take two primary professions and all three secondary ones.
- The beta client holds 2,205 recipes. Of these, 943 are new and 841 are changed from Classic (build 70338, 10 October).
- Most primary professions are reported to give a personal perk, such as 5% more Health for miners.
- Each profession builds three features for a camp. A camp feature gives everyone sitting there a buff or a tool.
- Low-level crafted gear now has real stats. A beta video shows blue mail boots with healing power in the first 75 points of Blacksmithing.
- Healing potions moved from Alchemy to First Aid.
- A quest in your starting zone hands you a manual that teaches Herbalism, Mining or Skinning.
- Crafting ranks need character level 5, 10, 20 and 35. You cannot reach 300 skill on a low-level alt.
- The first time a profession reaches 150, 225 and 300 skill, you earn Legacy Points for your whole account.
All WoW Forever professions compared
| Profession | Leveling | Gold at 60 | Raids | PvP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alchemy | A | A | A | C |
| Blacksmithing | C | B | B | C |
| Enchanting | A | S | A | B |
| Engineering | C | C | A | S |
| Leatherworking | B | B | C | C |
| Tailoring | A | B | B | C |
| Herbalism | S | A | C | C |
| Mining | S | A | C | A |
| Skinning | S | C | D | D |
| Cooking | S | B | A | C |
| First Aid | S | C | B | A |
| Fishing | C | A | B | C |
S is the best grade and D the worst. The grades are our own call. We started from two beta tier lists, checked them against the client data, and changed the grades where the reasoning did not hold. The last three rows are secondary professions: every character can learn all of them, so the grades show what each one is worth your time for.
Where players disagree
The personal perks are not settled. Most beta guides and videos list them, and one site that reads the beta client says it could not confirm them in the data. On 10 October we could not find Mixology, Repair All, Natural Talent or Cloth Scavenging in the Forever database either. Treat every perk in this guide as reported until launch.
How camps change the choice
A camp starts with a campfire, and only Cooking makes one. A basic campfire holds three features, a journeyman campfire five and an expert campfire ten. Each profession adds one feature, such as the
Two rules matter for your choice. You get the buff from another player's feature without knowing that profession. And a camp buff does not stack with the class buff it copies: the Fish Bowl gives 8% to all stats and Blessing of Kings gives 10%.
In a group, your own professions decide little about camp buffs, because somebody else will bring the feature. Alone, you only have what you can build yourself: two primary features and three secondary ones.
Each profession learns its first feature at 20 skill, and the client lists the next two at 140 and 300. Campfires need 100 yards between them, and the features share a cooldown.

Alchemy
Verdict: the raider's profession and a steady seller, with little to offer in PvP.
| Makes | Elixirs, flasks, mana and utility potions, transmutes |
| Personal perk | Mixology, as reported: your elixirs and flasks last twice as long and are 25% stronger |
| Camp | |
| Pairs with | Herbalism |
| New recipes | 72 |
| Our grades | Leveling A, gold A, raids A, PvP C |
Everything an alchemist makes can be traded, so there is always a buyer. If Mixology ships as reported, it is the reason to keep Alchemy on a raider: a flask that lasts twice as long is half the cost per raid night. Beta guides also describe an upgradeable Philosopher's Stone trinket. The item in the Forever database is still the Classic transmutation stone.
The six Classic healing potion recipes are gone from Alchemy. First Aid makes those potions now. Alchemy keeps rejuvenation, mana and utility potions.
In battlegrounds the perk does little. Elixir effects drop when you die, and the potions that decide fights can be bought by anyone.
Pro tip
If you play an alt, put Alchemy there. Potions and elixirs trade freely, so the alt supplies your main and the main keeps a perk it cannot buy.
Pros
- Every raid buys what you make
- Longer and stronger flasks for you
- Nothing you craft is bound to you
Cons
- Healing potions moved to First Aid
- Little value in battlegrounds
- An alt can do the same job
Blacksmithing
Verdict: weapons and heavy armor for Warriors and Paladins, and the profession beta players argue about most.
| Makes | Weapons, mail and plate armor, sharpening stones, shield spikes, skeleton keys |
| Personal perk | Repair All fixes your gear on an 8-hour cooldown, 4 hours at rank 2. Belt buckles add stats in four tiers, Silver to Arcanite |
| Camp | |
| Pairs with | Mining |
| New recipes | 197 |
| Our grades | Leveling C, gold B, raids B, PvP C |
Classic Blacksmithing gave you little until 300. Forever changes the early part: the first 75 points already hold pieces with Strength, Stamina or spell power, and a beta video compares the blue ones to drops from the first dungeons.
It is still expensive. You need more ore than you can mine while you level, and 185 recipes now stop giving skill about 25 points sooner than in Classic. Old leveling guides will run you out of materials.
Where players disagree
Gold is the argument. One beta tier list puts Blacksmithing at the bottom: you spend more on ore than you earn. Another puts it near the top, because the first smiths with a rare plan set their own price. Both describe the same profession: most smiths lose gold, and a few early ones get rich. We grade it B.
Pros
- Useful gear from the first levels
- Free repairs away from town
- Rare plans sell for whatever the smith asks
Cons
- The most expensive profession to level
- Little for classes that do not wear mail or plate
- Most crafted pieces sell poorly
Enchanting
Verdict: our top gold pick, and the only crafting profession that needs no gathering skill and no bag of materials to start.
| Makes | Enchants, wands, staves, off-hands and relics |
| Personal perk | Ring enchants for your own rings: Attack Power, Spell Power or Stamina. Turns small shards into large ones |
| Camp | |
| Pairs with | Tailoring |
| New recipes | 65 |
| Our grades | Leveling A, gold S, raids A, PvP B |
Enchanting turns gear nobody wants into dust and shards, and those always sell. At 60 you earn from two sides: materials from disenchanting, and enchants for other players.
While you level it costs you. Every green you disenchant is a green you did not sell, which is why we grade leveling A and not S. The Arcane Salvager at the camp raises what you get from each item.
Ring enchants are the reason raiders keep it. Both beta tier lists rate them a little above the belt, cloak and bracer bonuses of the other professions.
One beta video says enchants can now be listed on the auction house. We have not found that in the client data yet.
Pro tip
The first 30 points are no longer a wall. Early quests hand out green scrap items meant for disenchanting, so train Enchanting before you leave the starting zone.
Pros
- Gold from gear you would vendor
- No gathering profession needed
- Ring enchants only enchanters can use
Cons
- Costs gold while you level
- Many enchanters, so prices drop fast
- Rare formulas are drops
Engineering
Verdict: no personal perk, and still the profession to take for PvP.
| Makes | Bombs, dynamite, ammo, scopes, goggles, trinkets and gadgets |
| Personal perk | None. The gadgets are the perk, and most need Engineering skill to use |
| Camp | |
| Pairs with | Mining |
| New recipes | 77 |
| Our grades | Leveling C, gold C, raids A, PvP S |
Engineering was the strongest profession in Classic, and Blizzard gave it nothing extra in Forever for that reason. You keep the bombs, the rocket boots and the trinkets, and you still choose between Gnomish and Goblin engineering later on. Gnomes have a racial that makes gadgets backfire less often.
It is a poor way to earn. Most of what you build needs Engineering skill to use, and anyone with the skill can build it. Ammo and scopes are the exceptions.
Its camp features are different from all the others: a vendor and a repair bot in the middle of nowhere. For long farming sessions that is worth more than a stat buff.
Where players disagree
For raids, one beta tier list keeps Engineering at S and another gives it A. Explosives on cooldown are still free damage, but the profession got no perk and Blizzard may weaken the old gadgets. We grade it A for raids and S for PvP.
Pros
- Bombs, stuns and escapes no other profession has
- A vendor and repairs at your camp
- Useful to every class
Cons
- No personal perk
- Weak gold
- Little help while leveling
Leatherworking
Verdict: the most new recipes of any profession and the weakest camp feature.
| Makes | Leather and mail armor, armor kits, quivers, ammo pouches and bags |
| Personal perk | Bracer kits with Attack Power, Spell Power or Stamina. A saddle that raises mounted speed |
| Camp | |
| Pairs with | Skinning |
| New recipes | 277 |
| Our grades | Leveling B, gold B, raids C, PvP C |
Leatherworking covers four classes: Druid and Rogue in leather, Hunter and Shaman in leather and then mail. With 277 new recipes it changed more than any other profession, and nobody has gone through the high-end ones yet. Our raid and PvP grades can move after launch.
The Camp Tent sounds better than it is. Rested experience doubles what you earn from kills, so 5% of a level in rested experience is worth about 2.5% of a level, once an hour.
Like Blacksmithing and Tailoring, 198 Leatherworking recipes stop giving skill about 25 points sooner than in Classic.
Pros
- Gear for four classes from the first levels
- Skinning feeds it for free
- Makes bags, so tailors are not the only source
Cons
- The camp feature gives little
- Leather sells cheaply
- High-end recipes are untested
Tailoring
Verdict: cloth gear and bags with no gathering profession, and a hard last 30 points.
| Makes | Cloth armor, cloaks, bags and reagent bags |
| Personal perk | Cloak embroidery with Attack Power, Spell Power or Stamina. Cloth Scavenging: more cloth from humanoids |
| Camp | |
| Pairs with | Enchanting |
| New recipes | 180 |
| Our grades | Leveling A, gold B, raids B, PvP C |
Tailoring is the easy crafting profession to carry while you level. Cloth drops from the humanoids you kill anyway, and tailors now loot more of it. You make your own robes and your own bags, and bags sell from the first day.
Pair it with Enchanting and nothing goes to waste: what you sew for skill points, you disenchant.
The end is harder than in Classic. In the beta client no trainer or vendor pattern gives a sure point past 272 skill, and 208 patterns turn grey about 35 points sooner. Runecloth Bag now needs 215 skill and two dyes.
Pros
- No gathering profession needed
- Bags always sell
- Own gear for Mage, Priest and Warlock
Cons
- The last 30 points are slow and costly
- Little to sell besides bags
- Nothing for classes that do not wear cloth
Gathering professions: Herbalism, Mining and Skinning
Verdict: take two of them while you level.
A gathering profession costs nothing to train and pays from the first hour. You sell what you pick up, and that gold buys your mount at 40. This is why all three get S for leveling in our table. You can drop one at 60 for a crafting profession and keep the materials you banked.
Expect a fight for herbs and ore at launch. Everyone levels at the same time, and nodes will be contested. Skinning does not have that problem, because you skin what you kill.

Herbalism
| Gathers | Herbs, seeds and scarce reagents |
| Personal perk | Natural Talent: magic resistance that grows with your skill |
| Camp | |
| Pairs with | Alchemy |
| Our grades | Leveling S, gold A, raids C, PvP C |
Herbs have sold better than ore in every version of Classic, and alchemists need them every week. One beta video puts the perk at 10 resistance to all schools at 300 skill. If that number holds, it is a small bonus, so we grade raids and PvP at C. The Tauren racial
Mining
| Gathers | Ore, stone and gems, and smelts bars |
| Personal perk | 5% more Health |
| Camp | |
| Pairs with | Blacksmithing or Engineering |
| Our grades | Leveling S, gold A, raids C, PvP A |
Mining feeds two crafting professions, so ore always has buyers. The Health perk is why we grade it A for PvP: it is the only profession perk that makes you harder to kill at all times, and both beta tier lists rate it high for the same reason. In raids it helps a tank and does nothing for a damage dealer's numbers. Mining is also the usual partner for Engineering, so a PvP character gets both.
Skinning
| Gathers | Leather, hides and scales |
| Personal perk | 5% more damage against Beasts and Dragonkin |
| Camp | |
| Pairs with | Leatherworking |
| Our grades | Leveling S, gold C, raids D, PvP D |
Beta tier lists rate Skinning low, and for level 60 we agree. For leveling we do not. Beasts are a large share of what you kill on the way up, and the perk raises your damage against all of them. Leather sells for little, but you never leave your route to get it.
Secondary professions: Cooking, First Aid and Fishing
Verdict: learn all three on every character. They do not use a primary slot, and in Forever each one does more than before.
Cooking
| Makes | Food with a Well Fed buff, teas, camp meals and campfire kits |
| What you get | Food that adds stats and 5% experience from kills |
| Camp | The campfire itself: basic, journeyman and expert kits hold 3, 5 and 10 features. |
| New recipes | 44 |
| Our grades | Leveling S, gold B, raids A, PvP C |
No camp exists without a cook, because only Cooking builds the campfire. Most food now gives a Well Fed buff, and many recipes add 5% experience from kills. Every leveling player will want that buff all the time, so food should sell. How well it sells, nobody knows yet.
Pro tip
Keep a food buff up from level 1. With 5% more experience from every kill, cooking what you loot is the cheapest speed boost in the game.
First Aid
| Makes | Bandages, anti-venom, healing potions, poultices and tourniquets |
| What you get | Healing potions without Alchemy, and stronger bandages |
| Camp | |
| New recipes | 17 |
| Our grades | Leveling S, gold C, raids B, PvP A |
First Aid took the healing potions from Alchemy. A potion needs a vial, spices and one herb, so herbalists should level First Aid early: you already carry the herb. Bandages heal more than in Classic, and in PvP a bandage and a potion are two extra heals for classes that have none.
Fishing
| Catches | Fish for Cooking and for alchemical oils |
| What you get | A tackle box, daily quests, and fishing in lava with a special rod |
| Camp | |
| Our grades | Leveling C, gold A, raids B, PvP C |
Fishing does not make your character stronger and it takes time away from leveling, so it can wait until 60. The Fish Bowl is the camp version of Blessing of Kings.
At 60 it is a way to earn that needs no primary slot. Alchemists turn fish into the oils that go into flasks and armor potions, raiders eat fish dishes every week, and Forever adds uncommon and rare catches. You also do not compete for nodes the way miners and herbalists do.
Where players disagree
One beta tier list puts Fishing at the bottom for gold: the income per hour is small, and bots fish too. We grade it A. Every raid consumes what it supplies, and it costs you nothing to keep. If bots flood the market after launch, this grade drops first.
Jewelcrafting and Inscription: what the beta hints at
Neither profession is in Forever at launch, and Blizzard has not announced either one. This section is a guess, built on what beta players found in Dalaran.
- A jewelry store, Cartier & Co. Fine Jewelry, stands in the Magus Commerce Exchange next to the profession trainers. Its shopkeeper is named Timothy Jones, which may only be a reference to a Classic designer with the same name.
- The same building has a storefront that fits Inscription.
- The character statistics panel in the beta has a line for "Highest Inscription skill". It has no line for Jewelcrafting.
The statistics line is the stronger clue, because a store can be decoration and a tracked statistic has to be added on purpose. If one of the two arrives in a later update, we expect Inscription first.
Do not pick your professions around this. If you want to be ready at low cost, keep a gathering profession: in earlier versions of
Best professions for each class
If you want to make your own gear, match the crafting profession to your armor and take the gathering skill that feeds it.
| Class | Pair for your own gear | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Druid | Leatherworking, Skinning | Leather armor at every level |
| Hunter | Leatherworking, Skinning | Leather, then mail, plus quivers and ammo pouches |
| Mage | Tailoring, Enchanting | Cloth armor, and you disenchant what you sew |
| Paladin | Blacksmithing, Mining | Mail, then plate, and weapons |
| Priest | Tailoring, Enchanting | Cloth armor, wands and staves |
| Rogue | Leatherworking, Skinning | Leather armor. Take Blacksmithing if you want weapons |
| Shaman | Leatherworking, Skinning | Leather, then mail |
| Warlock | Tailoring, Enchanting | Cloth armor, wands and staves |
| Warrior | Blacksmithing, Mining | Mail, then plate, and weapons |
For PvP on any class, our pick is Engineering with Mining. For gold with the least effort, take two gathering professions and sell everything.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best professions in WoW Forever ?
It depends on the goal. Our picks are two gathering professions for leveling, Enchanting for gold, Alchemy or Enchanting for raids, and Engineering with Mining for PvP. These are pre-launch grades.
How many professions can you have in WoW Forever ?
Five on one character: two primary professions and all three secondary ones, which are Cooking, First Aid and Fishing.
What is the best profession for making gold?
Enchanting in our grades, with Alchemy, Herbalism, Mining and Fishing next. Nobody knows the Forever economy yet, so the safe choice is two gathering professions: you only sell and never spend.
What professions should I take while leveling?
Two of Herbalism, Mining and Skinning. They are free to train, the materials sell from the first day, and you can replace one with a crafting profession at 60.
Do I need a profession to get camp buffs?
No. You get the buff from any feature at the camp you sit at. You do need a campfire, and only a cook can build one.
Can I change professions later?
Yes. You can unlearn a primary profession at any time, but you lose all its skill and recipes and start again from 1 if you come back. Secondary professions cannot be unlearned.
Are there new professions in WoW Forever ?
Not at launch. Forever keeps the twelve Classic professions. Beta players found a jewelry store in Dalaran and an Inscription line in the statistics panel, so Jewelcrafting or Inscription may come later, but Blizzard has announced neither. Mages get a Research system that sits in the professions window, and it is a class feature.
